Should believers do yoga?

Interesting conversation here. I don’t know much about yoga, but I think I agree with both of them… which pretty much means I don’t know :0)

What do you think?

  1. that’s just Johnny Mac being Johnny Mac…

He himself would say that if it was purely exercise, the exercise is itself not wrong. Doug Pagitt is another emergent fellow whose cowardice towards a defensive stand for propositional truth is regrettable. All in all, I think that it (like so many other Christian dogma) requires discernment from those involved – not a new law brought down from the Grace Community Church mountain.

  2. *This is a translation of Stephen’s comments for those who aren’t current or former seminary students:

“that’s just Johnny Mac being Johnny Mac…”
-Referring to John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community church. John is known for being very smart, but swimming in a slightly different stream than many popular Christian teachers, and, in my own opinion, a bit of a fuddy-duddy. For example, he believes that there are no longer any gifts of the spirit. And I’m totally qualified to make that assessment, given that I’ve read a couple of books and my wife tells me I’m smart sometimes. The hundreds of thousands of people who respect and follow ‘Johnny Mac’ just haven’t talked to my wife yet…

“Doug Pagitt is another emergent fellow…”
-Emergent: as in, he swims in the most liberal and controversial of the ‘four streams’ of the emerging church (see previous post for a great explanation from Mark Driscoll)

“…whose cowardice towards a defensive stand for propositional truth…”
-‘Emergent Fellows’ often teater on the sharp edge between a neutered (‘cowardice’) Gospel and an effective post-modern approach to evangelism (reaching people who have been trained not to believe in ‘propositional truth’). I checked out his website and it makes me uncomfortable. And, to be honest, kind of jealous. Seriously, he’s got a ‘.tv’ website. That’s pretty cool…

“All in all, I think that it (like so many other Christian dogma) requires discernment from those involved…”
-This issue is an awful lot like meat sacrificed to idols in the first century church. If you think it’s wrong, then it’s wrong for you, but don’t condemn your brother.

“not a new law brought down from the Grace Community Church mountain…”
-As in ‘Johnny Mac’ has a following of people that might give him a little too much Biblical authority.
-There’s also a subtle Derek Webb reference here. He wrote a song that has everything to do with this type of topic. View the music video here
