We saw ‘Hancock’

Steph and I went to see the ‘Hancock’ movie last night. I read a review beforehand that said it had quite a bit of profanity in it, and that turned out to be accurate. They drop the f-bomb once, the s-bomb once or twice, and the a-bomb (not that a-bomb) about a bazillion times. But almost all the profanity comes from the character of John Hancock, and it’s used to show how he is a very crude, rough-around-the-edges kind of guy who has serious a serious need for a friend. There is also some generally crude humor. For example, Hancock threatens to shove various peoples’ heads up various other peoples’ rears, and those aren’t always empty threats.

So I wish they toned it down a bit, but in the end it didn’t bother me much.

This morning I was googling around, trying to find the review I initially read, and found several others, and let me tell you, I’m glad I didn’t read them beforehand. They totally blow the movie. If you haven’t seen the movie, there’s a serious plot twist that you don’t want to know going in. Do yourself a favor and let this be the last thing you read about the movie ’till you watch it.

In the end, I give the movie about a 7 out of 10. I thought it was pretty funny, and I love unpredicatable movies — and a movie plot hasn’t caught me off guard that seriously since the last M. Night Shyamalan flick.

At the end of the Dark Knight I was left in want of a hero large enough to make life meaningful again, someone who could bring light to the set, who could heal the lives ruined by injustice, crime, ambition, violence. The Batman, the faltering, finite hero we love, disappears into the night still determined to try to fix the world, but everyone, including him, knows how impossible and grievous this calling will be.

The movie underscores how hopeless this task for human heroes – to heal the earth of all its injustices, to offer choice even to The Jokers of the world. We wait for consummation, like Simeon the priest waited for the Consolation of Israel.

Is it possible that a Marvel commic could stir up purer worship of Jesus?

The author basically says what everyone else has been saying.

I really want to see this movie, but it sounds downright troubling.

‘Expelled’ Review

I’ve been waiting for a while for the “Expelled” movie to come out. I haven’t had a chance to go see it yet, but from the sound of this review, it’ll have been worth the wait. Here’s an excerpt: (HT: Justin Taylor)

The best part of the movie came in this vein when Richard Dawkins suggested that aliens came and seeded the earth with life. He said that he believe this is a very good theory. Stein responded by saying (and I quote loosely from memory) ”So, you will allow intelligent design from and alien to be taught, but you won’t allow intelligent design if we call the intelligence a transcendent ’God’?” He made his point. It was effective.
